Personal organization is all the rage these days. There are so many different tools and techniques you can use. You really need to find the one that has the features you need and works the way you want. Understandably, being a geek I am always interested in using technology wherever possible. Having worked with my realtor Panna Karia lately, I realize there is a huge need for Road Warrior training and skill development in the realtor community - something I will eventually figure out a solution for and present through workshops and seminars.
Here is some more info about the various online tools:
- Jott is a voice-to-text translation service. It allows you to call a number, speak normally into the voice prompted system, and have it transcribed into SMS and email for yourself and your friends. I can’t wait to see them offer a 604 exchange phone number to use! Vancouver is sadly behind Toronto on getting service at the moment. This video says it all: http://www.jott.com/how-to/videos/
Update: a friend at work suggested I purchase a 604 forwarded number through something like Skype or Voip. Its a great idea as it lets me avoid long distance charges to their Toronto number. Unfortunately that probably won’t work. Jott uses caller id to recognize who you are.
- Use Jott to add items into your Google Calendar. I haven’t tried this yet, but I am pretty sure it should work (well as long as they don’t kill the api at http://www.grinn.net/jott2gcal) .
- Its worth nothing that there are many other online tools available for you in case one of the ones I mentioned here doesn’t grow on you. In a vote of various online todo lists at lifehacker, RTM (Remember The Milk) comes out on top. Make sure you read the comments as well as there are other tools mentioned outside of the voting.
- A challenger to RememberTheMilk is IWantSandy which seems to offer everything RTM does, and then some. What is great about IWantSandy is that it gives you an email address you can use to send messages to it. Still experimenting with this one but it looks promising.
- For good discussion about outsourcing and personal productivity, follow a blog I just discovered today. Seems the writer and I have a lot of things in common. I like a lot of the topics he has written about which are focused on personal improvement, outsourcing, online productivity tools and so forth. Will have to remember to read his entries about Suresh (aha.. let me tell Sandy!) since I want that for my own online business.
- If self-hosting all your data is important, then be thankful about one of the Lifehacker comments where someone talks about Tracks - a Ruby-on-Rails driven application. Tracks looks very slick. Unfortunately, it requires a complicated installation of PHP and MySQL - always a pain in the behind. Tracks is based upon David Allen’s Gettings Things Done time management methodology. (If you want to try out Tracks without actually downloading and installing, go here.
Good luck in getting organized!
