My short list of essential, must-have and totally free Wordpress plugins I will never deactivate

As with the other pages in this section, I will do my best to keep this page updated with the Wordpress plugins I use here and for other clients.  Let me know if you think another plugin should be added to this page.  Screencaps provided with Bugshooting, a great and free screen capture program.

Google XML Sitemaps

image Absolutely essential as a minimum standard for SEO.  It automatically rebuilds your XML sitemap when you add a page/post (click on screen cap to see) and manages the robots.txt file too.  Dozens of other handy features and options like building the sitemap in a seperate process outside of a new post entry, notifying yahoo, ask, msn, and google via pings and much more. More information about what XML-Sitemaps are and how they can help you to get indexed by the major search engines can be found at Sitemaps.org and the searchenginewatch blog.

pageMash

imageWhat a timesaver!  A gui with drag-drop capability for managing Wordpress page ordering, page renaming, visibility, etc.  Forget about page orders and all that time wasting nonsense.

Search Everything

image I never realized how limited the search function on a default Wordpress install was until I tried finding stuff I wrote about previously.  Search Everything indexes pages, excerpts, attachments, drafts, comments, tags and custom fields.  You can also exclude specific pages or posts.

Subscribe2

image I don’t have much of a blog email subscriber base, but some of my clients do and they need an easy way of informing subscribers via automated emails when new posts appear on their blog.  Subscribe2 makes the whole process pain-free.  It has so many options and granular control, I won’t even bother listing them here.

Wordpress Database Backup

image If you are going to install only one plugin from this page, it must be this one.  On-demand and automated backups sent to your email of your entire Wordpress database!  How awesome is that?!

Maintenance Mode

image Tremendously handy when you need to perform routine maintenance.
